MATTHEW ROBINSON
Biography

Born and bred in Rockhampton, Queensland, Matthew crossed the country to train at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts and since graduating, has carved a diverse career as an actor, writer and musician. After joining the original Australian cast of Mamma Mia! direct from college, Matthew was careful in balancing performing projects with the creation of his own work.

In the theatrical world, Matthew's roles include Henrik Egerman in A Little Night Music (Opera Australia), Freddy Eynsford-Hill in the Australian national tour of My Fair Lady (Opera Australia), Chris Barnes in Metro Street (Arts Asia Pacific/Power Arts/DIMF), the title role in Pippin (Peter Cousens' Kookaburra), Hortensio in Kiss Me Kate (The Production Company), the UK and Swedish Eurovision entrants in Eurobeat – Almost Eurovision (Glynn Nicholas), the title role in the contemporary opera McCubbin (Hydra/NGV), the narrator and musician in Two Weeks with the Queen (Windmill Performing Arts), and the romantic lead Gene Gorman in the Australasian premiere of Sondheim’s Saturday Night (Magnormos). Matthew also created the role of Teague, an intellectually-challenged 14-year-old, for the World premiere of the Australian play God’s Last Acre for Playbox Theatre Company, now Malthouse Theatre.

On television, Matthew has featured as a white-collar murderer on Stingers, a jaded footballer on Blue Heelers and as a resident vocal coach on the Fox 8 reality series The Singing Office. He has appeared alongside Mary Tyler Moore in A Most Deadly Family (Village Roadshow), been a special guest on Good Morning Australia and Mornings with Kerri-Anne, and most recently played a member of the American military in the yet to be released Steven Spielberg/Tom Hanks teleseries The Pacific.

As a songwriter, 2007 marked the release of Matthew's debut album Radio, a compilation of music drawn from the pop/rock side of his songwriting, with material from acoustic gigs, the concert Immaculate Confection and some brand new tracks never before heard. Radio can be bought online through Middle Eight Music (www.middle8.com). The release of Radio features the instrumental talents of the members of insidezero, the original band in which Matthew appeared from 2002-2005. insidezero had two independent releases and received airplay on Triple M and the Austereo network.

Writing for the theatre, Matthew’s first musical Metro Street received Australia’s richest theatre-writing award, the Pratt Prize for Music Theatre, providing him with $80,000 to develop the piece.  It was subsequently workshopped through The Production Company and then performed in concert at the 2006 Adelaide Cabaret Festival.  The World Premiere production of Metro Street opened on April 7th, 2009 at the Dunstan Playhouse, Adelaide Festival Centre, produced by the State Theatre Company of South Australia, Arts Asia Pacific and Power Arts, starring Nancye Hayes and Debra Byrne. It was then invited to open the 2009 Daegu International Musical Festival in South Korea where it was named in the top 10 musicals playing in the country. Metro Street was subsequently nominated for five Helpmann Awards (Best Direction of a Musical, Best Lighting Design, Best Choreography in a Musical, Best Music Direction and Best New Australian Work), shortlisted for the Victorian Premier's Literary Award for Best Music Theatre Script, won a South Korean DIMF Award (Best Female Performer - Debra Byrne) and won two ATG Curtain Call Awards (Best Musical and Best Female Performance - Verity Hunt-Ballard).

As a live cabaret artist, Matthew has toured Australia in three self-composed pieces: the one-man show Metrosexual (Melbourne and Canberra seasons); Immaculate Confection with Lucy Durack, which travelled to Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Tasmania and the 2005 Adelaide Cabaret Festival; and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang also with Lucy Durack (2007 Perth season). In 2008, he appeared in Trevor Ashley's Showqueen Sundays cabaret sessions and his performance of his song Boyband appears on the live CD recording Showqueen Sessions 1. Matthew’s theatrical compositions have also featured in: the Off Broadway revue Get Here (York Theater Company, N.Y.C.); the La Salle-SIA Music Theatre Degree Launch (Singapore); The Windows Project (ATYP and Darlinghurst Theatre seasons, Sydney); and, ozMade Musicals (Federation Square, Melbourne). In conjunction with Lucy Durack, Matthew was presented with the inaugural Judges’ Award at the 2003 Sydney Cabaret Convention.

Matthew is currently working on two original writing projects, his second book musical and the musical revue Sing On Through Tomorrow.
